About This Lesson
Ask students to look at the photograph of York Castle in Britain. Although these remains date mostly from the 13th century (1200s), the first castle was built on this site in 1068 by William the Conqueror following his invasion and capture of England. Tell students that castles were introduced to England, along with the Feudal System, by the French after the Norman conquest of 1066. Then ask them to think about the different ways in which a castle could help William to keep control.
Great activities. Additional instructional methods would provide for differentiated instruction.
