This is a great investigation to do when studying fractions and number with some shape included too. The task can be done through observation but to solve fully requires a little algebra and understanding of similar triangles. The teachers' notes on the webpage give a lot of ideas as to how you might run the activity and an extension task is also suggested. You could make this into a whole lesson and ask students to present their ideas on a poster or presentation.
