About This Lesson

In this 90 minute lesson, students will enhance the SEL Competencies of social awareness, perspective-taking, empathy, and social engagement by reacting to Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman” speech. They will watch the speech and identify words and phrases that resonate with them. Then they will create a poster combining those words with their self-portrait to personalize the speech’s message.

The lesson is aligned to the Common Core Standards for ELA and to the Ohio State Content Standards for ELA.
