About This Lesson

LightUp, a small business funded by the National Science Foundation, has developed an educational augmented reality software application to help kids learn STEM subjects.

LightUp’s Hololab software allows kids to try many different experiments to learn about the Earth’s structure, magnetic field, and areas of biology and physics.

They combine advanced augmented reality and adaptive learning techniques to capture learners’ interactions with real-world objects with a mobile phone, analyze the interactions and provide personalized guidance to each learner.

“They can virtually do a lot of the experiments that might be too hard or too expensive to do,” says LightUp CTO and co-Founder Tarun Pondicherry.

LightUp is supported by America’s Seed Fund powered by the National Science Foundation, a nearly $200 million program that awards research and development grants to small businesses and startups, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact.
