About This Lesson

This lesson uses Pulitzer Center-supported reporting to explore oral history as a primary source.

Students will be able to…

  1. Explore examples of Pulitzer Center-supported reporting in which the reporter used family history to frame or complement a story.
  2. Define oral history and learn about the techniques and value of it by looking at examples used in reporting.
  3. Connect historical events to events in their family or community history, and use oral history skills to carry out their own interviews at home or in their community.

I used this lesson in my 9th

I used this lesson in my 9th grade classroom and it worked out pretty well, it could use some tweaks, mostly from me, because this is a new experience for me but also my students take some getting used to when it comes to new material. What's being offered here is amazing and I can't wait to do more lessons.

I'm planning to use this as a source to encourage the "non-readers" in my English class to think about how oral history has its own power.
