The American Immigration Council strives to promote a better understanding of immigrants and immigration by providing educational resources that inspire thoughtful dialogue, creative teaching and critical thinking. Dedicated to the American values of fairness, social justice and respect for all people, the Council is committed to making immigration an “everybody issue.”
What We Do: We develop lesson plans, resources, information on our immigration past and present, book and film reviews, as well as partnerships with community organizations and educators available on our website. We sponsor a nationwide “Celebrate America” Creative Writing Contest annually open to fifth grade students to appreciate the effects of immigration on their own lives. Additionally, we sponsor a “Change in Motion” multimedia contest for youth to explore the role immigration plays in their lives and communities. We fund also grants for innovative projects created by teachers on immigration.
Our blog, Immigration In and Our of the Classroom, offers pratical how-to approaches for teaching about immigration, building relationships with immigrant students and families, updates on access to education issues, and other relevant issues pertaining to immigration past and present.
