About This Lesson
Teachers nowadays more than anyone can tell you kids live in a very technological world. Not only are they accustomed to televisions but also to cell phones, computers, iPads, music players and much more. Let's face it as teachers and caretakers most young kids and adults know more about technology and computers than we do. In order to keep them up-to-date and sufficient in this modern technological world it is important to teach them basic computer skills. Below are 6 computer skills I like to teach my 4th grade students.
Internet Safety
Internet safety is one of the top things that not only fourth-graders but any child should know while using the internet. Being aware of what sites they are using as well as who they are communicating with is very important in keeping kids safe and protected especially as a teacher. Teaching them about what sites to avoid and even informing them of what searches are inappropriate can help keep them safe and innocent minded.
Sending Important Documents
Often times in such a technological world businesses and organizations now use computers and the internet to send important information quicker and more efficiently. It is important for our children to learn how to upload documents early on especially if they plan on trying to send a resume one day, possibly filing their own taxes or even getting a driver's license in the future.
Making Spreadsheets
It is never too early for children to learn how to make a spreadsheet. As teachers we know not only are they great for keeping track of homework and other activities but they also teach children about organizing and planning. Many companies and even schools nowadays use spreadsheets.
Copyright And Plagiarism
It is very important to teach kids about copyright and plagiarism especially in this modern world. It is very easy to find any bit of information on the computer nowadays however there should be some rules and limits to what information you actually use. Being inspired by something or using something as a guideline is one thing but kids need to understand that plagiarism is a serious act that can come with heavy consequences. With so many pieces of information available at their fingertips they may not realize copying someone else is not the right thing to do. As teachers we need to be aware and proactive in reducing plagiarism.
How To Read A Webpage
While this may seem simple to some it may not be that easy for others. Learning how to read a webpage correctly can make searches easier and more efficient. Knowing how to read a web page comfortably can save you time and help you to navigate different websites.
Sending An Email
As teachers we really know the importance of emails. Whether we are emailing parents, keeping in touch with other teachers or even just networking in some way emails are becoming an increasingly popular way to communicate between people and companies. Students should learn early on what email is and how to use it.
Overall these are just six of the many different things that 4th graders should be learning about computers. In general they should always be brushing up on their typing skills and even their research skills as they will always need those tools growing up in a computer savvy world. The top priority is teaching them safety when visiting websites but aside from that you want them to enjoy and learn from the internet.
