About This Lesson

Students should already be familiar with the Spanish American War, America’s involvement with Cuba and the Philippines. America’s generally had one of two reasons for getting involved in other country’s, was it a realist or idealist reasoning (for the spread of democracy or for gaining resources and land). America got involved in Puerto Rico to protect them from foreign invasions. After the Spanish American War ended America did not leave Puerto Rico but rather took it on as a protectorate. Consequences came from America’s involvement in Puerto Rico.
