About This Lesson

In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. government took several steps to ensure that the nation and its citizens remained safe from terrorism. Use this lesson plan to explore the question: How does the balance between ensuring national security and protecting civil liberties shift after a terrorist attack?

In this lesson, students will:

  • Explain the concepts of national security and civil liberties.
  • Examine multiple points of view expressed towards the balance between national security and civil liberties.
  • Question the balance between national security and civil liberties before and after 9/11.

Lesson plans include interactive images, videos, and links, that are best viewed directly from our website using the link in the resources tab.

This resource appears in Module 6 of our 9/11 Primer.
