The Chalukyas of Badami were one of the most powerfull kingdom to rule the south India. They mainly occupied the whole of Karnataka and some parts of Tamilnadu and Andrapradesh. The Founder of the Kingdom was Raja Jayasimha and the most famous and the Powerful king to rule the kingdom was Pulakeshi II. Pulakeshi II was known for his bravey and for overpowering the Gangas, Kadambas and the Alupas. He even earned the Tilttle "Daskshinapatteshwara" for stopping one of the powerful ruler Harshavardhana on the river banks of Narmada.
The Chalukyas are famous for their contribution in the field of Administration, Literature, Art and Architecture. The Kingdom was divided so that there will be ease in managing the whole kingdom. The Chalukyas of Badami patronized literature. Kannada and Sanskrit developed very well. Kannada was their state language. They were the ones who gave the name ‘Karnataka’ to this land. During this period, the tripadi form of poetry came into existence. The Chalukyas encouraged all traditions and sects like that of the Shaivas, Vaishnavas and the Jains. They supported the construction of Jain temples and Buddhist viharas too. The Chalukyas of Badami were great builders as well as art-lovers. They built beautiful temples at Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal. They developed a special style of sculpture called ‘The Chalukya Style’ in Indian architecture.
