About This Lesson

Brief Summary of Lesson (not to include step-by-step instructions):

It is important to teach students about diversity to help them develop empathy for others. This lesson, for first graders, uses Todd Parr’s picture book It’s Okay to Be Different to help students understand what diversity means and how it applies to them. Extension: Students can visit Todd Parr’s website to help create pages for their own books about diversity and “Me Box”. Students share their completed books and boxes with another class.
