About This Lesson
In this 90-minute lesson, students will improve SEL skills such as social awareness and relationship skills. Students will read and analyze Dylan Thomas’ “Do not go gentle into that good night,” while working collaboratively with a partner by actively listening and sharing perspectives. The lesson begins with a wrap around that deals with students’ fears and moves into repeated readings of the poem that includes a group line-by-line annotation of the poem. Students will then work collaboratively to come to consensus on the central message of the poem. The lesson ends with students collaboratively writing and presenting a villanelle. This lesson is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for the 11-12th grade band.
