About This Lesson
Use this teaching kit to investigate Down House in Kent, England, the home of the most influential and well know scientist of the 19th Century, Charles Darwin between 1842-1882. Look at the history of the house using photographs, site plans and a site tour, or plan a trip to view for yourself the interactive exhibition of Darwin's life and work, illustrating his theories and ideas.
This is geared for British standards as it has students compare Victorian life to current life within the territorial area of the school. This is not practical for American students. However, some of the links to the resources could be used when students want to learn more about the personal life and home of Charles Darwin. Perhaps as an extra-credit assignment in a science class to create a tour of his house? Or maybe have students look at his gardens and the artifacts in his libraries to see how this affected his theory of evolution? However, for a U.S. course, this would be more about science than history as Darwin is not directly listed in social studies standards.
