About This Lesson

This lesson covers the early part of Elizabeth's reign and her portraits and should be used as an introduction to Elizabeth. The first slide of pictures shows the problems Elizabeth faced when she came to the throne - money; finding a suitor; the legacy of the Marian burnings etc. The ISM materials show celebrities without make up and should be used to provoke discussion on public image. The class should then be encouraged to look at the portraits of Elizabeth and see what they can see or when they think they are painted - before the information is revealed to them.
