Fantastic resource! I used it as a way to build prior knowledge before teaching "Bud, Not Buddy." Made a few changes to make it more middle school friendly: placed students in "families" of four and cutting out a few expenses.
I've used this lesson for three years with my juniors and my students really enjoy it! It's always one of the most talked about activities!
I am a student teacher. I utilized this lesson plan this semester with Juniors. They had so much fun. It helped them gain more perspective about what families faced during the Great Depression.
Very useful! I will be using this in my classroom and really appreciate the ready-made directions and budget charts. The only thing I'll change is the requirement that pairs be boy-girl. I'll have my students be in pairs and label them "worker" and "caregiver"!
