About This Lesson
Between 1882 and 1968, 4,743 people were lynched in the United States; over 70 percent of the victims were African-Americans. In this lesson, students read about the horrible history of lynchings in America, and about the proposed federal law against lynching. Then, in small groups, they work as editorial teams for a 1934 newspaper. Students create, layout, and publish an opinion/editorial page for a newspaper focused on the lynching issue.
