About This Lesson

This handout is 3 maps. Map 1 is of Vasco da Gama's Voyage from Portugal to India, and I've included Mali, Egypt, Ottomans, Tunis, Genoa, Persia, Arabia, Spain, and Portugal. It can be used with the Journal of Vasco da Gama, since he mentions people from Tunis who speak Genoese when he arrives in Calicut. Map 2 is Columbus' first voyage, but it's in Spanish (it was the best map I could find). The 3rd map is ocean currents of the world, which can help explain why da Gama's voyages had so many odd detours and why Columbus' voyage was so direct.
