About This Lesson

This handout briefly summarizes three reasons why the Ottoman Empire fell apart (nationalism, losing foreign wars and territory, and the Armenian Genocide diverting resources during WWI). Students are then asked to explain which of the three reasons they feel was most important towards the fall of the Empire. Then students read about Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's reforms in Turkey. They then have to explain which of these reforms would have the biggest impact on Turkey.
