ViSUS LLC, a small business funded by the National Science Foundation, has created software to help farmers analyze aerial photos of crops.
Farmers often gather crop data using drones to take aerial photos, but it can take up to two days to line the images up correctly or stitch the images together. ViSUS’s ViSOAR Ag Explorer software can stitch hundreds of full-resolution images together in just minutes — no internet required — allowing farmers to quickly get actionable information about their crops. The technology creates a gigapixel map that can go down to one-centimeter accuracy to help farmers identify weeds, for example, potentially reducing pesticide and fertilizer use while increasing crop yield.
ViSUS is supported by America’s Seed Fund powered by the National Science Foundation, a nearly $200 million program that awards research and development grants to small businesses and startups, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact.
