About This Lesson

The Spanish America War is often referred to as the first “media war.” During this time journalist dramatized events to help persuade the American people to support America entering in a war with Spain. Two journalist; William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer romanced and hyped up newspaper headlines during this time in a style that became known as yellow journalism. This lesson will focus on student discussion and evaluation of newspaper articles from the sinking of the Maine and how these articles led to American Imperialism.
