About This Lesson

This blog entry describes a process teachers can use to convert a good math lesson into a great integrated lesson (STEM). The initial lesson plan is for middle school math (graphing, statistical analysis, and measurement) but with Rimwe's approach training, it can be converted into a wonderful integrated lesson that includes technology and science and engineering. Students learn via a hands-on boat-building project the design / test / evaluate components of engineering and important science concepts like flotation, force, gravity, and displacement. CCSS: 4.MD.2

Standards

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
