About This Lesson

Students take a look at two political thinkers that spent a lot of time trying to answer the question, "Why Government?" - Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. This lesson combines our Influence Library entries on these men and adds activities that ask students to compare and contrast Hobbes and Locke and to think about how these philosophers influenced those that followed in their footsteps.

My class loved this lesson. The discussion about the differences between Locke and Hobbes was fruitful and they enjoyed the cartoon activity. Those students lacking artistic ability invented slogans instead.

I actually use this lesson with my high school SPED students. I do have to add some to it in order to differentiate but overall it breaks it down pretty well. There is video that I add to it. It's done by high school AP teacher. I can't recall the name but if you google, "What does the Locke Say." You should find it. I use it after I do the lesson...it's a parody of What Does the Fox Say.
