About This Lesson

Ask students to look at the photograph, draw their attention to the date that it was taken - 14th September 1914. Students should then be given information about enlisting for WWI and the Battle of the Somme (as given in the attached Teacher’s Notes). Now ask them to work out what would have happened to most of the men (boys) in the photograph. This could start a discussion on topics such as patriotism, the ‘lost’ generation, Pals’ battalions, volunteering and how all of these affected Britain’s role in WWI.

The activity is excellent and would be valuable when supplemented by a full lesson plan, objectives, instructional methods, and alternate activities.
