About This Lesson

This lab is used with my integrated science class in the unit on nonrenewable energy. To make it inquiry I give each group an unknown sample of coal that they compare to their known samples. One way to do this activity is to perform the lab first, let students uncover the properties of the coal samples, then do the background research. This gives the students a purpose for reading in the content area.
This lesson supports the CCSS. Specifically, under Reading Standards for Science and Technical Subjects Standards Grades 9 and 10: 3, 7 and 10.
